Plans are in the pipeline for an unmanned aerial device (UAV) or “drone” to join the Team. On an exercise last year, a recreational drone pilot demonstrated just how useful this new technology will be in searching vast areas of remote moorland which would otherwise take many volunteers many hours to cover. A drone can search all terrain quickly and efficiently at a fraction of the cost of a helicopter.

Mountain Rescuer Eric Needham, received national recognition from Mountain Rescue England and Wales and the Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation for 40 years voluntary service to mountain rescue. The long service certificates were awarded to Eric by the Chairman of Buxton Mountain Rescue Team, Richard Doran, on behalf of the two rescue organisations.
Eric has been involved in over 1000 call outs over the 40 years, and has been part of Buxton Mountain Rescue Team for 40 years and part of the leadership committee for over 20 years. He produced the team member’s development guide in addition to setting the team …
On Thursday 18th January, Buxton MRT were visited by the Greenwood family from Cheshire and heard a very moving story about their son. Their son Tom, who died in the spring of 2017, had loved the countryside and in particular the Peak District National Park.
In memory of Tom, the family had made a collection and wished it to go to a charity that they knew their son would have heartily supported.

One of Buxton’s Team members, Neil Stephenson, is taking part in this year’s Spine Mountain Rescue Challenger Race.
The Mountain Rescue Challenger is the first 108 miles of the iconic Spine Race, billed as Britain’s Most Brutal Race. The race started in Edale on Saturday 13th January and heads north up the Pennine Way to Hardraw in Yorkshire. Racers have 60 hours to complete the tough course. The Spine Race was started in 2012 and the Mountain Rescue Challenger event was specifically introduced three years ago for Mountain Rescue Team Members to raise much-needed funds for their Teams. The New Year started with Buxton Mountain Rescue’s first call out of the year.
At 14:29 on Monday 1st January, the team was called out to assist an injured walker in the Temple Fields area of Buxton.
A local gentleman had set out for an afternoon walk when he, unfortunately, slipping aggravating an old injury. The team despatched two response vehicles to rendezvous with team members on Green Lane, who were directed to the casualty with the appropriate response equipment.
After initial assessment and treatment by Mountain Rescue trained casualty carers, the gentleman was made comfortable on the team’s stretcher and transferred to easier …
On 21st December the team was visited by Derbyshire County Councillor Jim Perkins. He was there to present the team with a cheque for £360 from the ‘Community Leadership Grant Scheme’. The cheque was accepted on behalf of the team by Geoff Sumner a long standing team member.
Buxton Mountain Rescue Team are extremely grateful for this generous grant. We are a registered charity and totally dependent on donations from the public. Congratulations to Roger Bennett, recently retired team member, who was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Pride of Buxton Awards held at the University of Derby’s Devonshire Dome in Buxton on Saturday 2nd December 2017. The award was given in recognition of Roger’s 40 years service to Buxton Mountain Rescue Team and was presented by Mr Bill Weston MBE and the Mayor of the High Peak, Cllr Matthew Stone. The Pride of Buxton Awards were organised by the Voluntary and Community Services, Peak and Dales.

Following a phone call from Bill Weston MBE, the leader and founder of the Billerettes , one of the Buxton Mountain Rescue Team’s Deputy Leaders attended the Dickensian Christmas Market at the Pavillion Gardens in Buxton on Saturday 25th November to receive a “small cheque”. To his astonishment the cheque was made out for the princely sum of £700! Derbyshire Cave Rescue were also awarded £700.
