The supermarket chain, Waitrose, is again helping Buxton MRT to raise funds.

Each month the store donates £1,000 to local good causes divided between three organisations.  At the check-out customers are given a green token which can then be dropped into one of three clear boxes near the exit.  At the end of each month the £1,000 is shared between the charities proportional to the number of tokens dropped in each box.

The rescue team needs to raise over £30,000 each year to remain an operational unit so every penny counts.  Waitrose Buxton is in the Springs Shopping Centre so please get down …

The promoters have kindly agreed to Buxton MRT making a bucket collection at the event.

Kenton Cool is one of the world’s leading high-altitude climbers. He has successfully climbed Mount Everest eleven times. He will be talking about his latest expedition to Nanda Devi East, and also about his latest book One Man’s Everest.

This weekend, 24th October, the clocks go back and darkness will descend an hour sooner.  It’s a sign of winter closing in and a time of year when all those venturing onto the hills and moors should think about their skills and the equipment they carry.

Internationally renowned mountaineer, Nigel Vardy, has joined Buxton Mountain Rescue Team as an Associate Member to help with training, fundraising and operational support.

Nigel is a man of many talents; an international mountaineer, a motivational speaker, an author and a record breaking climber.  He describes himself as 6′ 2″, blue eyed and scarred.  Nigel has taken part in many climbs and adventures around the world.  However, it was in 1999 that he suffered severe frostbite whilst climbing on Mount McKinley in Alaska.  His injuries left him with horrendous amputations of his fingers, toes and nose.  Nigel says, “Watching parts of my body die …

The team’s new Incident Control Vehicle took pride of place on a stand at the National Emergency Service Show at the N.E.C, Birmingham this week.

The stand was hosted by A.P.B. Mobile Installations Ltd which carried out all the electrical fittings for the new Control vehicle.  Placed amongst  dozens of shiny new fire appliances, ambulances and police cars it generated widespread attention from other rescue team members.

On Saturday 14th September Buxton Athletic Club celebrated the 3rd anniversary of the Pavilion Gardens monthly 5km run (http://www.buxtonac.org.uk).

The run is held on the second Saturday of every month and there’s usually a stall selling delicious home made cakes and jams which are sold for a nominated charity.  This month the club chose Buxton Mountain Rescue Team as the nominated charity.

The morning started wet with a typical Buxton downpour which thankfully subsided before the 9am start.  There were an amazing 82 runners, some who were race masters, and some who just turned out to have a go!  The throng included a group …

It was a chance meeting whilst members of Buxton Mountain Rescue Team were fundraising in Macclesfield that led to “The Macclesfield Women’s Friendship Group” inviting the team to explain more about mountain rescue at one of their meetings.

On a late summers evening in September Dr Matt Stagg, a Macclesfield resident himself, attended the United Reformed Church Hall, armed with a laptop and projector.  He took the audience of approximately thirty ladies on an hour long tour of the history of mountain rescue both nationally and locally.  Matt described the roles and capabilities of the Buxton team and the voluntary service that it provides to the local community both urban and more …
