Buxton Mountain Rescue Team members were saddened by the news of the death of Honorary Team Member, Dr Philip Astill, on 26th August 2016.

Dr Astill had been a keen supporter of the team since he moved from Tideswell to Buxton as a G.P. many years ago.  He was active on many team call-outs but later concentrated on improving the team’s first aid and medical knowledge and regularly adjudicated on examinations when the team was part of St John Ambulance.

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team member, Peter Farrer, was the recipient of a special award presented on Thursday evening by Councillor John Brook, Chairman of Chapel-en-le-Frith Parish Council.

Each year the Parish Council makes a Community Award to someone the council considers has made a special contribution to the local area.  When the council heard that Peter’s 42 year commitment to mountain rescue had been recognised in the New Year’s Honours list with an M.B.E., they wished to add to their own congratulations with the 2016 Community Award.

There was no shortage of volunteers when members of Buxton Mountain Rescue Team were invited by Bollington Brewery to help support this year’s Bollington Three Peaks Race.
The races takes in a 5.7 mile loop around the tops of Kerridge Hill, White Nancy and Nab Hill and is the only fell race in the U.K. to start and finish at a brewery.  As you can imagine it’s a very popular event.

Transformation HQ is a keep fit gymnasium with branches in Buxton and Whaley Bridge.  Their aim is to encourage people to loose the flab, get fit and transform their bodies back into what nature intended.

Earlier in the year the gym held a Summer Ball charity event which raised £500 for Buxton Mountain Rescue Team.  The sum will be matched by a donation from the Santander Building Society making a grand and very welcome total donation of £1,000.

It was with the deepest sadness that members of Buxton M.R.T. learnt of the sudden death of Kinder team member and Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation Chairman, Ken Blakeman.

Ken, aged 69, from Great Moor, Stockport, had been a stalwart of Kinder team for over 40 years and was the team’s Chairman.  He was also Chairman of the Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation, helping to guide not only his own team, but also the other six teams that make up the organization.

Marathon Man, Ben Brindly finished his seventh marathon on Saturday afternoon with the Ladybower Trail.  A mere 3,200 feet of ascent with 26.2 miles bringing his total for the week to over 180 miles. 

There were lots of people at the finishing point under Derwent Dam to welcome him home.  Team members had tried to meet Ben somewhere on each of his marathon days and a few more were waiting at the very end.

Despite the weather taking a turn for the worse the Emergency Services Day held in Pavilion Gardens, Buxton on Sunday was a real success.

Owing to the temporary marquee on the promenade the show wasn’t a big as usual but it still attracted hundreds of people even on an overcast and sometimes damp day.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service was there in force with some very expensive looking vehicles and Derbyshire Cave Rescue Organisation provided an instant pot-hole for young people to try out their skills.…

Yes, he’s off on day one of a truly marathon event, seven marathons in a week, to raise money for Buxton Mountain Rescue Team.

Ben Brindley, of Tideswell, believes the work the rescue team does is amazing and wants to help them out by raising money and awareness. The 33-year-old said: “They are an emergency service but rely solely on donation. I have always given to the charity as an insurance policy but now I want to do more.”
