Joint exercise with Staffordshire Fire & Rescue

First Christmas present of the year is from LEEK

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team annually hold a flag day in Leek, Staffordshire, on the run up to Christmas and every year the kind locals give generously to boost our team funds.
This year Leek folk must be in an extra festive spirit as the sum of the collection exceeded £500.  Throughout the day fourteen members took turns to hold the collection buckets but it must have been the visit of that Very Important Person who encouraged everyone to dig deep.

2016 Quiz raises £241. Lucky winners announced.

Winners of this year’s word quiz compiled by Gillian Halliday of Boston have been announced.

This quiz needed you to find a place name within the British Isles which cunningly concealed the name of a unit of measurement.  For instance; Home of the Trotters?  ans: PECKham.   Easy?  Well there were sixty similar questions and getting them all right was a challenge even for the most dedicated quizzers.

Team Member Visits Buckingham Palace

Buxton Team member Peter Farrer, his wife Margaret and three daughters attended an investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace last Thursday (11/11).
Peter was recognised in the Queens Birthday Honours List earlier this year and awarded the “Member of the British Empire” (M.B.E.) medal for his services to “Mountain Rescue in the Peak District”.  He has served the Buxton Team for more than forty years in varying roles and supported the Peak District Mountain …

David Rutley MP for Macclesfield, joins the team for a night.

David Rutley, local MP for Macclesfield, braved the cold on the evening of 3rd November to volunteer as the casualty for a training exercise run by Buxton Mountain Rescue in Macclesfield Forest.

The training exercise centered on a scenario in which David, as the casualty, became stranded in the forest, after walking and slipping down a steep mountain bike trail.  The evening exercise gave twenty-two members of the rescue team the opportunity to hone their medical skills and work on how to respond quickly to a real emergency.  Team members …

Mount Kilimanjaro climber presents a mountain of money

UPDATE  Thursday 27th October:

 At last Thursday’s regular training night a special visitor dropped in to join the team for the evening.  Becky Higton set off in September to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa as a “Thank-you” and fundraiser for Buxton M.R. after she had received treatment from a team medic during a fell race in 2014 (see text below).

Becky’s attempt at the famous 5,900 metre summit was successful and in the process raised a huge amount of money for the team. …

Sally Mosley speaks up for the team.

Last Sunday, Sally Mosley, a prolific local writer and guide to the Peak District, presented a public talk at Over Haddon Village Hall last Sunday in aid of the rescue team.

The talk was entitled “Potty About The Peak District” which probably sums Sally up very well as she has been a keen walker and an enthusiastic public speaker for many years.  Her regular column in the Peak Advertiser is all about her favorite walks and is always full off funny stories and anecdotes.

My name Joe lomas and I’m a Provisional Member of Buxton Mountain Rescue Team.  On 16th October I will be running the Manchester Half Marathon to raise money for the rescue team but I need your help.

Dr Philip Astill 1931 – 2016

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team members were saddened by the news of the death of Honorary Team Member, Dr Philip Astill, on 26th August 2016.

Dr Astill had been a keen supporter of the team since he moved from Tideswell to Buxton as a G.P. many years ago.  He was active on many team call-outs but later concentrated on improving the team’s first aid and medical knowledge and regularly adjudicated on examinations when the team was part of St John Ambulance.
