While descending a track into Cressbrook Dale, a fell runner took a tumble resulting in a painful lower leg injury. It became quite apparent that self-evacuation was not a sensible option. The runner dialled 999 and asked for Police and Mountain Rescue. Phone find technology was used to establish the location of the casualty and as is usual for a mid-week incident both Edale Mountain Rescue Team and Buxton MRT were called out to attend.

A party of young people were walking through the Lathkill Nature Reserve when one of the group tripped and exacerbated a previous hip injury. With the casualty in great pain and unable to walk any further, the other members of the party made some quick decisions and put their outdoor training into practice. While some established their location with an OS grid reference and dialled 999 to ask for Police and Mountain Rescue, others made sure the casualty was both warm and comfortable.

Paramedics from East Midlands Ambulance Service were soon on scene …

As the dry weather continued, the team received a request from Derbyshire Constabulary for our drone team to assist Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service who had been made aware of a fire ‘somewhere’ on Kinder Scout.

As the team arrived at the rendezvous point, we were asked to climb to the plateau and assist the fire crews in identifying the specific area on fire. The team deployed onto the hill and made their way towards the Woolpacks area, where the fire was thought to be.

The Team were called out to look for a missing person who was last known to be walking in the area close to Three Shires Head.

With limited information, a quick search of the area and other locations close by resulted in the reported missing person being found safe and well.

Our colleagues from East Midlands Ambulance Service called the team out to assist with an incident on the Monsal Trail involving a mountain biker with suspected shoulder and head injuries near the viaduct at Monsal Head.

Team members arrived at Monsal Head and walked down to the scene of the incident, and to meet with a team response vehicle which had accessed the trail, from further along at Millers Dale.

In the meantime the paramedics from EMAS had assessed the casualty’s injuries and decided it would be possible to walk …

While attending incident 16, the team received a request from Derbyshire Constabulary for our drone team to assist Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service who had been fighting a moorland fire on Rushup Edge.

As the drones our now routinely carried on our response vehicles, the drone was available to deploy immediately from the earlier incident to the fire area.

Mam Tor, with its broken road, is a well-known walking location at the head of the beautiful Hope valley. The path traversing the bottom of Mam Tor gives a good link up to Hollins Cross, providing a short and popular walk around the hill. The path crosses a few brooks where the ground can be boggy, uneven and unstable.

Facing into the afternoon sun Windgather Rocks is a superb location to relax and enjoy the Peak District and is a magnet to rock-climbers and walkers. A climbing pair had just finished a route and were walking off the top of the crag when one slipped sustaining a painful lower leg injury.

They quickly identified that mountain rescue help would be needed to evacuate the climber, and they made a 999 call was made to Derbyshire Constabulary who called for assistance from Buxton MRT.

The Team was called to assist two walkers who had set out from Edale car park to climb up Grindsbrook Clough, with the intention of traversing the southern edge path and returning via Jacob’s Ladder. The route took them longer than first thought and darkness fell before they could complete the journey. Uncertain of their location, and without torches they wisely decided to dial 999 and ask for the assistance of mountain rescue.

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team were called out by the Duty Controller and team vehicles were soon on their way to rendezvous …

The Rescue Team were called out again to the Goyt valley to help a local dog walker who had tripped sustaining a bang on the head and an upper arm injury. Thankfully one of the walkers was a nurse and was able to assess the situation and identify the need for help from the emergency services and made a 999 call.

As the location was some distance from the road, the nurse also knew that mountain rescue assistance would be needed so this was requested at the same time. East Midlands Ambulance Service were …
