Incident report
The second callout of the day casme in at just after midday as we were called to an an incident involving a walker who had slipped and taken a tumble on the steps coming down from the ‘Cheshire Matterhorn’, more correctly called Shutlingsloe.
The original rendezvous point was to the east of the hill, which is where the first cohort of team members arrived. This resulted in a pincer movement with team members eventually arriving on paths from the north and east.
We are very grateful to the Peak District National Park ranger who facilitated alternative access for team vehicles. Initial medical treatment was given to the casualty by team members. The casualty had tripped on the path coming off Shutlingsloe and she had sustained an injury to her ankle in the fall.
Paramedics from North West Ambulance Service were soon on scene, coordinating with West Midlands Ambulance Service, to take over medical matters, while the team readied the mountain rescue stretcher for the evacuation to the road and the waiting ambulance. It was a long carry out requiring several rotations of the stretcher party, who made short work of safely lifting the stretcher over the walls and fences, during the carry off.
The casualty was soon loaded into the ambulance and on her away to hospital. A big shout out to both of the paramedics for getting to the casualty, which was just a few metres from the top of “the matterhorn”; neither had been to Shutlingsloe previously, and both said the views were spectacular.
The warm weather certainly made the wearing of PPE quite interesting for the team members, but the equipment was disinfected and made ready for the next callout, which proved to be within minutes!
The team send the casualty our best wishes for a speedy recovery and we hope she is able to return soon and enjoy the delights of the countryside around Macclesfield.
The team would also like to thank the owners of the farm who allowed us to park some of our vehicles at the initial rv point and cooperation of the walkers, while we blocked the path during the treatment of the casualty.
As we handed the casualty over to the ambulance crew, our third and fourth calls for assistance were already coming in…………..
