Incident report

A group of experienced walkers had set out from Great Hucklow to enjoy a winter’s day walk in the Peak District.

Unfortunately, one of the walkers slipped on a patch of frozen ground near the trig point close to Oxlow Rake, which resulted in an injured ankle.

Due to the nature of the injury, the walker was unable to weight-bear, so the group called ‘999’ asking for the Police, and then Mountain Rescue. Thankfully, the group was well-equipped and did a great job keeping the casualty warm using a survival bag, extra clothing and hand warmers – all crucial when things go wrong in winter.

The team was called and 12 members responded. Meeting at Rowter Farm, team members were shuttled in Mobile 1 and Mobile 4 to as close to the casualty’s location as possible.

Then, members continued on foot with the required equipment.

Once on scene, the casualty was found to be in good spirits and was assessed by a member of the team.

During this time, the stretcher was set up ready for the carry to meet Mobile 2 at The Cop, which is east of Peak Forest along the Limestone way.

After a short, and at times difficult, carry the casualty was placed into Mobile 2 and then driven a short way to meet a friend who transported them to hospital.

We’d like to thank the owner of The Cop Farm who provided space for Mobile 2 to park while waiting for the casualty.

Now it was time to transport team members back to their cars at Rowter Farm, with some team members opting to enjoy the fresh air with a walk back. Team members then returned to base to clean down the equipment ready for the next call.

We wish the casualty a speedy recovery and thank you to our team members who responded.
