Incident report

While leading a route on the Lower Tier of Hoffman Quarry a climber fell sustaining a serious lower leg injury. The fall was witnessed by some climbers who were close by and dialled 999 and asked for Police and then Mountain Rescue.

The location of the quarry on the outskirts of Buxton meant locally based team members were soon on scene, with response vehicles arriving shortly after. The preliminary medical assessment identified the severity of the injury, and a request was made by the Incident Controller for helicopter evacuation of the casualty. The thick low cloud over Buxton resulted in poor flying visibility so our colleagues from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency were called to provide a Sikorsky S92 aircraft. Whilst this was en-route team members continued to stabilise the fallen climber and make ready for the stretcher carry to the helicopter landing site.

Paramedics from East Midlands Ambulance Service and Doctors from Edale Mountain Rescue Team arrived to assist with the medical care, aided by a Paramedic from the helicopter aircrew.

After further treatment the patient was then transferred to the aircraft for the onward journey to hospital in Sheffield.

Our best wishes go to the casualty for a full and speedy recovery. Our grateful thanks also go to the climbers who phoned for help and then assisted us during the incident, and to the local landowner who helped with access.

The team also appreciate the patience and understanding shown by drivers around the Harpur Hill Business Park where our vehicles parked during the incident.

Team equipment was then returned to the response vehicles for cleaning and restocking ready for the next callout.
