Incident report
A Buxton and Edale team snatch squad was called to Millers Dale, following reports of a fallen person down the embankment near to the Litton Tunnel at Litton Mill.
The casualty, an 11 year old boy from Sheffield, had tumbled some 8 metres down the embankment landing on a ledge, sustaining back and chest injuries. He was treated on site by an East Midlands Ambulance Service paramedic. A rope rescue system was set up by team members along with crew of the Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service Rope Rescue Unit, from Matlock. A mountain rescue stretcher was lowered, the casualty secured onto it, and then hauled back up the embankment to the Monsal Trail.
Meanwhile, an air ambulance had landed above the Monsal Trail and the casualty was carried some 400 metres to the aircraft. He was then flown to the Sheffield Childrens Hospital for further treatment.
Neil Carruthers, Buxton Team Leader said, “This was a joint operation involving mountain rescue, fire service, ambulance service and the air ambulance. The close co-operation led to effective team working which ensured a successful outcome to this incident”.
