Incident report
As the previous call-out was coming to a conclusion another 999 call was received by the police. This time two walkers had become disorientated in low cloud and rain as they made their way across Kinder’s high plateau.
Members of Buxton and Edale teams started to plan a search strategy whilst the Duty Rescue Controller spoke to the lost people on a cell-phone. From their description of the area the Controller was able to gain a good idea of their position around Mad Woman’s Stones and instructed the missing people to walk due South towards the edge path. This they did and soon reported back that they had walked out of the cloud and could now see farm buildings. Their position in the safety of Lady Booth Clough was also confirmed by the police helicopter which also joined in the search. Team members were stood down.
Photo: Low cloud is a common hazard on Kinder and can reduce visibility to just a few yards in seconds. A map, compass and navigation skills are essential at any time of year.
