Incident report
Initially a call-out for Kinder M.R.T. but escalated to include Glossop and Buxton Mountain Rescue Teams when five young people reported themselves lost on Kinder Scout.
The group of five from a school in Suffolk were taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award Scheme when they became disorientated on the moor. Heavy rain and low cloud had hampered their progress throughout the day but it was the onset of darkness which prompted their request for assistance.
The three teams and two Search & Rescue Dog Association dogs put into action a pre-planned search of the west and southern edges of Kinder Scout. The weather was still appalling with heavy raining flooding the rivers. Initial contact with the group had been difficult and it wasn’t until later in the evening when their exact location could be established using Sarlock, a mobile-phone tracking device. Search dog handler Ian was nearest to the location and quickly located the group huddling in a tent. They were then led down to Edale Cross where a Kinder team vehicle was waiting to carry the down to Hayfield.
Buxton members descended off the moor and returned to base where equipment drying could start.
