Incident report
A joint call-out for Edale and Buxton Mountain Rescue Team to rendezvous at Millers Dale Station following a report of a man having fallen a considerable distance in Chee Dale.
The elderly gentleman from Coalville in Leicestershire had been walking with his wife when the accident occurred which resulted him tumbling about 30 feet down the bank into the River Wye. The rescue teams responded quickly but had trouble locating the exact location of the incident. However, team members worked up and down the river bank and it wasn’t long before the casualty was found.
The gentleman had suffered abrasions and severe bruising together with hypothermia from a soaking in the river. He was treated on site by an E.M.A.S. paramedic. Following a short technical evacuation from the river side back to the path the man was carried by stretcher to the Monsal trail where an East Midlands Ambulance Service vehicle was waiting.

It was very impressive to see these Teams in action. We were very grateful for their expertise and commitment.
If Esther and Matt are looking at this. Thank-you very much for your help in calling the Rescue and staying with me until Ian was safely in their hands
Hello both, just wanted to wish Ian well, what a terrible experience you had.Good job we have such dedicated ambulance personnel. Take care, good wishes to you both. Jenny xx
Hi Sue!
We are so pleased that all ended well and that your husband was okay. The team did an excellent job.
We’re very happy we were passing when we did and were able to help (thankful for phone signal!)
Take care
Esther and Mat
Chee & Wye Dales can be very slippery, especially after such a lot of rain this June, and difficult area to get into & out again – Ian, please choose more carefully where you fall! What a fright for you both. Hope all is mending nicely, and the chilly water did not leave you feeling bad for too long. So glad you had good people to help, Mountain Rescue is one we all need to support more, along with Air Ambulance, especially as we get older. Elderly gentleman! oh dear! We don’t like to think of ourselves like that, just a bit ‘older’! With all good wishes – Marie
Hope you get better soon Ian. Lucky you were not on your own doing a recce.
I invested in a GPS (to get exact location) for this very reason. Lucky you were found quickly.
Hope to see you both on a Ramble soon.
