Incident report
A group of friends were enjoying the winter sunshine with a walk over Parkhouse Hill, near Chrome Hill (Dragons Back). Whilst descending a particularly steep section one of the friends slipped on the greasy, muddy limestone, the type where even your vibram soles have no grip! Unfortunately, the casualty sustained a very painful injury to the left ankle. Other members of the group called for assistance by dialling 999 and asking for the police, then Mountain Rescue.
Team members were requested to meet at Glutton Bridge and were ferried to the road below the casualty who was up on the ridge above. A small party proceeded to ascend towards the casualty with medical equipment. Whilst the casualty was being assessed by casualty carers from the team, additional team members arrived on the scene with more equipment. Due to the steepness of the descent, a rope system was established to assist in the extraction of the casualty. The casualty was administered pain relief, then transferred to the mountain rescue stretcher before bring lowered down the steep slope with the aid of a safety rope until it was safe to carry the stretcher to the awaiting Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance. The casualty was then transferred to the helicopter before being flown to hospital.
We’d like to thank George Street Garage for the use of their car park, the casualty’s friends and members of the public who looked after the casualty until the team arrived, members of the public who had to wait patiently in their cars as the helicopter could only land safely on the narrow country lane and lastly our dedicated team members.
We wish the casualty a speedy recovery.
