Incident report
Buxton Mountain Rescue Team called at 16.00 hours following the report of two people lost in the mist on Kinder Scout. The couple, from Manchester, had walked in reasonable conditions from Upper Booth to Kinder Downfall. However, later in the day the weather deteriorated with cloud dropping to around 350 metres and reducing viability to 5 metres. On their return route from Kinder Downfall the couple became disorientated and lost their way. Concerned that daylight would soon fade and fearful of becoming benighted, they decided to call for help.
Telephone conversations with the couple indicated that they were probably in the Kinder Low area and a search party was quickly dispatched up Jacobs Ladder. Not being definitely sure as to the location of the couple and concern about the potential onset of hypothermia, Edale MRT and Kinder MRT were also activated and two M R Search & Rescue Dogs called in.
The couple were located at 17.20 hours between Kinder Low trig-point and Edale Rocks. With no physical injuries the couple were simply escorted off the moor and back to Upper Booth.
One comment
Good run out for team members and their dogs – as if they needed it! Must have been quite panicky for the lost walkers but the catch feature of the W – E footpath at Edale Cross would have stopped them from straying too far south and then it’s just a left turn onto the motorway. Suppose they were not at all confident of their approx position and the mist plays tricks. Hope they were greatful :)
