Incident report

Three mountain rescue teams and several search dogs were alerted when a walker was reported overdue following a late afternoon wander on to Kinder Scout. Mobile phone contact with the walker confirmed that he was lost in the middle of a boggy Kinder Scout and probably in area of Buxton team’s responsibility.

Kinder and Edale teams remained on standby whilst thirty-three members of Buxton team met at Upper Booth near Edale to form search parties. They were deployed up Jacob’s Ladder and Crowden Brook.  Fortunately, a Buxton team member was walking on Kinder at the time of the call-out and, after only a short time searching, able to make contact with the man.

The casualty was a sixty-nine year old from the Nottingham area who had ventured alone  on to Kinder without a map or compass. Low cloud hampered his progress and he ended up stranded and disorientated amongst the peat groughs of Crowden Head.   The weather forecast was for rain and as darkness fell the rain arrived with a vengeance.  The recovery of the man from the moor was a slow process, and an additional rescue party climbed Grindslow Knoll to assist.

At 11.30 pm the casualty party arrived at search control, where the man was given extra food and hot drinks. Following a medical check by a team nurse, the man was taken home by a friend.

I think even the most experienced walker could easily get disorientated if the weather closes in and the mist comes down whilst walking on Kinder. A group of us went walking on Bleaklow yesterday and noticed the mist closing in as we finished our walk about 4pm. I don’t think anyone should be walking alone and certainly not go unprepared for the unexpected.
