Incident report

A Buxton and Edale Mountain Rescue snatch squad was called to assist the ambulance service around lunch-time to recover an injured walker from a field east of Peters Barn, near to the Hollins Cross track in the Edale valley.

A 49 year old male walker from Belper, Derbyshire, had left the track and wandered into the adjoining field where he fell down a manhole. This caused a suspected lower leg fracture. He was treated on site by the ambulance service paramedics, including pain relief and splinting, and was then put onto a mountain rescue stretcher and carried by team members to the waiting road ambulance. He was taken to Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport, for further treatment.

A team spokesman said “This chap was extremely unlucky in falling into this manhole, believed to be the only one in this field – especially today, as he is celebrating his birthday”.

    Hi,

I am that walker, although calling it a manhole does make me sound like Mr Bean!
I would like to express my deep gratitude to everyone involved in my rescue, I was mightily impressed by the speed of my rescue and everybodys proffesionalism.
I am now back at home in Belper recovering from my ordeal after spending 11 nights at Stepping Hill Hospital involving 2 operations on my leg and many antibiotics.. I was expecting a pub lunch and a few pints on my birthday, so to be given free Morphine was a bonus!
Once again, thank you for all you did for me and you can be sure that once I am up and about and back at work, donations to your organisation will be forthcoming.
    Cheers

Thanks for letting us know about your progress, Chris. Sounds like you’ve been through quite an ordeal with your injury.

We train hard to ensure everything goes smoothly at an incident, so it’s gratifying to get positive feedback from the people we rescue.

Hope you have a speedy recovery.
