Incident report
A major rescue operation was launched on Sunday evening, following reports of an injured walker in Crowden Brook, on the southern edges of Kinder Scout. Both Buxton and Edale teams responded.
The casualty, a lady, was located near the top of Crowden Brook. She had slipped whilst descending the steep sided valley and fallen some 20 feet into the waterfall area. Despite having serious head and back injuries she remained conscious throughout the incident whilst she was treated on site by mountain rescue personnel, and then placed into a supportive vacuum mattress.
Due to the difficulty of access of her location and the nature of her injuries, a RAF Sea King helicopter was requested to winch her from the site. The Yorkshire Air Ambulance also arrived and remained on standby at the top of Crowden Brook, usefully providing additional oxygen.
The casualty was prepared for the airlift, and both she and an Edale team paramedic were winched into the aircraft which flew to the Northern General Hospital, Sheffield, for further treatment.

Thanks to all the team, especially James, the doc and the two guys who controlled the hi-line on last sunday’s job. There was no spin on the stretcher, and apart from a short delay at the hospital LS for the ambulance the job went as smoothly as it could have done. It was a tricky winch due to the nature of the gully, and the guys in 128 had to hover downwind on the edge of the power limits. Lets hope she makes a full recovery.

We were on Kinder Scout on Sunday and were very near to the incident as it unfolded. I have to say we were very impressed by the whole operation, which was carried out in quite difficult blustery conditions. You guys, together with the Sea King crew deserve a great deal of credit. Well done and keep up the fantastic work.
