Incident report
The team was called out at 15:29 on Saturday afternoon to a walker who had fallen sustaining a painful lower back injury. Team members made their way to the designated RV point at Edale Station.
The first four team members headed up onto Kinder from the Nags Head pub along the path towards Grindslow Knoll. The casualty, who was with walking friends, was located on the Edale path that overlooks Grindsbrook. Due to the prospect of a long stretcher carry off, Edale Mountain Rescue Team was also tasked and as the nature of the injury could be serious, the coastguard helicopter was also called. After the initial assessment, it was decided that a stretcher carry off was preferred and the coastguard helicopter was stood down.
The casualty was given pain relief, placed in a casualty bag to keep them warm and a vacuum mattress to protect their back and loaded onto the mountain rescue stretcher.
As darkness had now fallen, a small number of team members went ahead by torchlight, to locate the best extraction route to avoid the rocks around the west side of Grindslow Knoll. Team members transported the stretcher steadily down towards Edale taking it in turns to be on the stretcher party for the long and awkward descent to the Nags Head pub, where the casualty’s friends were waiting to transport the casualty to hospital, thus freeing up a land ambulance on a busy Saturday night.
We would like to thank all team members for their continued commitment, especially on a Saturday evening when they could have been relaxing with family and friends.
