Incident report

While walking up Berry Clough one member of a DofE group stepped into a deep hole sustaining a painful lower leg injury. Initial assistance was given by some passing walkers while contact was made with the group’s supervisor, who was soon on scene.

As the casualty was unable to walk the decision was taken to call for external help and the call was made to the Police and then Mountain Rescue. The supervisor was able to give a detailed OS grid reference, so members of the team were soon on scene to provide assistance. Pain relief was provided to the casualty while a box splint was placed on the lower leg and the mountain rescue stretcher prepared for the carry-off down Berry Clough to the road.

Here a member of the student’s family was waiting with a car to transport the patient to hospital.

We wish the casualty a speedy recovery and hopefully the successful completion of this stage of the DofE Award.

We are also grateful for the help from the passing walkers in the initial stages of the incident, the assistance of the Peak District National Park rangers and the patience shown by car drivers as they waited for the road to be cleared of our response vehicles.

Team members then cleaned all the equipment used as per our Covid-19 regulations and the vehicles returned to base for the next callout.
