Incident report
Team members had no sooner returned to work, home, or base from the previous call out when the second callout of the day came through from the Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation – PDMRO Duty Controller.
The incident involved a walker who had taken a tumble on the path at the top end of the narrow gorge of Lud’s Church while on a circular walk starting from the Roaches. In the fall the casualty had sustained a painful leg injury preventing further progress on the walk. A member of the party made the 999 call and our colleagues from West Midlands Ambulance Service were first on scene to provide initial medical care. Due to the remote location of the incident, the ambulance crew called for our help to assist with the evacuation of the patient on one of our mountain rescue stretchers.
Team vehicles were soon on scene and with the assistance of staff from the Gradbach Scout Camp were able drive close to Forest Wood, reducing the distance which equipment had to be carried to the location of the incident.
After placing a box-splint onto the leg of the casualty the patient was transferred to the stretcher and made ready for the 1km carry off to the waiting land ambulance. This extraction was relatively straightforward although wading across the stream provided a cooling distraction given the heat of the day. The casualty was then driven to hospital in the ambulance for further treatment, and hopefully a swift recovery and return to the Peak District National Park.
