Incident report
A mountain biker on a downhill section of a track in the Goyt Valley caught a pedal on the ground and was flipped off his bike, sustaining a very painful lower leg injury. Fortunately, some nearby walkers witnessed the incident and were able to make a 999 call to ask for assistance from the emergency services. A helicopter from Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance was soon on scene, and the aircrew began the initial medical treatment.
East Midlands Ambulance Service and Buxton Mountain Rescue Team were also called to assist with the casualty evacuation and carried a stretcher, casualty bag and vacuum mattress to the incident site. After careful assessment by the medical staff, it was decided to transport the patient to hospital by road. The casualty was transferred to the stretcher for the short carry off to the ambulance for onward transfer in the care of EMAS paramedics.
The equipment used during the rescue was then cleaned as per our Covid-19 protocols and the vehicles returned to base for the next callout.
As ever we were grateful for the support of members of the public who either assisted in the early stages of the callout or waited patiently while the road was blocked by emergency vehicles.
We wish the casualty a speedy recovery from the injuries and hope to see him back on his bike soon.
