Incident report
Whilst out enjoying a day on the millstone grit of Stanage Edge, a climber took a fall, landing hard on the ground. Derbyshire Constabulary received the 999 call and deployed Edale Mountain Rescue Team to the scene. In line with many other mid-week callouts, EMRT contacted Buxton Mountain Rescue Team to give a larger number of team members to evacuate the climber and 4 BMRT team members were quickly able to respond.
Initial medical treatment was given at the crag, before the casualty was carefully placed on a mountain rescue stretcher for the carry down to the roadside. Both teams were grateful for the support from other climbers during the initial stage of the evacuation, when a hand over hand lift was necessary down some steep ground. Once on to more gentle gradients, the wheel was connected to the stretcher making the extraction more straight-forward.
The casualty was then passed into the care of our colleagues at East Midlands Ambulance Service for onward transportation to hospital, and hopefully a speedy recovery and return to the Peak District National Park.
Both teams then began the process of cleaning down the rescue equipment and rehydrating team members ready for the next callout.
