Incident report
The team responded to a Saturday morning call from our colleagues at East Midlands Ambulance Service, to assist with an incident involving a horse rider who had taken a tumble far enough from the road to require our help.
Paramedics were already on scene providing the initial medical care. Team members quickly deployed the mountain rescue stretcher to assist with the extraction. The casualty was placed onto vacuum mattress, which acts as a whole-body splint, and carried on the stretcher, across a field to the land ambulance and onto hospital for further medical treatment.
Its some time since we have been called at assist with a fallen horse rider. Thankfully the horse had already been taken into the care of someone more qualified than team members, and our horse whispering skills were not required on this occasion.
As at previous incidents during the last few months, team members carried out the rescue wearing the appropriate PPE, whilst others present were held back in reserve at the road in case they should be needed. The equipment used was then disinfected before being packed back onto the vehicles ready for the next callout.
Our best wishes for a speedy recovery go to the casualty.

I am the person that you very kindly rescued into the ambulance. I was so relieved to see you, I had been very agitated but when I saw you arrive I relaxed and let it happen! I am an experienced rider on an experienced horse who I have an incredible bond with, this illustrates that accidents can happen to anyone at anytime. We are so lucky to have men and women like yourselves who give up their time to help others, very humbling. On a lighter note due to my broken femur I cannot possibly cook or do housework, so my other half has had to brush up his Jamie Oliver skills, admittedly with mixed results. Once again heartfelt thanks.
Hello Debbie, thank you for your message. Yes, accidents do happen, glad you’re safely back at home. BMRT send you our best wishes, try to enjoy your other half’s Jamie Oliver impressions.
