Incident report
The Team was called out by North West Ambulance Service to a lady who had slipped whilst walking on a footpath above the A54. The lady had sustained a lower leg injury.
Weather conditions at the time were not pleasant, with driving sleet and snow, whipping across the moors. Team members are aware that in such an exposed location, any casualty is going to become very cold, very quickly.
The first team members on site assessed the situation and quickly provided some protection from the wind, sleet and snow; whilst her fellow walkers were moved to the warmth of one of the team’s vehicles.
The lady’s injury was assessed by the paramedics and team members, before being carefully placed onto the stretcher, wrapped in a fleecy casualty bag and vacuum mattress. The team then transferred the casualty, in blizzard conditions down to the awaiting ambulance, where she was transported to Macclesfield Hospital.
Brilliant work by our colleagues in the North West Ambulance Service in very unpleasant cold and wintry conditions. A few days later, the same roads were snow covered and difficult to negotiate in a vehicle; a sign that “Winter is coming”.
