One of Buxton’s Team members, Neil Stephenson, is taking part in this year’s Spine Mountain Rescue Challenger Race.
The Mountain Rescue Challenger is the first 108 miles of the iconic Spine Race, billed as Britain’s Most Brutal Race. The race started in Edale on Saturday 13th January and heads north up the Pennine Way to Hardraw in Yorkshire. Racers have 60 hours to complete the tough course. The Spine Race was started in 2012 and the Mountain Rescue Challenger event was specifically introduced three years ago for Mountain Rescue Team Members to raise much-needed funds for their Teams. There are 18 racers taking part in this year’s Mountain Rescue Challenger event.

Being in January, racers can expect to experience the full brutality of the British winter weather conditions. As the Pennine Way crosses high remote ground, racers are required to carry an extensive kit list including a sleeping bag, stove and a bivvy bag or tent.
