Incident report
Buxton Mountain Rescue was called to Cressbrook Dale, near Litton, to assist the ambulance services with an injured walker.
The casualty, a 74 year old man from Northenden, Manchester, had fallen from the height of Peter’s Stone, a local landmark, and rolled 15 metres onto a rough scree slope above the valley floor. He sustained head injuries along with body lacerations and grazes.
Paramedics from the East Midlands Ambulance Service, and the Derbyshire Air Ambulance, treated him on site.
The Rescue team placed him on a spinal board which was then put on a stretcher. This was sledged c. 100m further downhill to the valley floor where an air ambulance was waiting.
The casualty was flown to the Northen General Hospital, Sheffield, for further treatment.
Neil Carruthers, Buxton Team Leader said “The casualty had fallen a considerable distance, suffering a nasty injury. Potentially these could have been much more serious”.

I would just like to say how impressed our walker group were with the speed in which the desperately needed help arrived. Our walking group leader was handled with so much care and kindness. The group were all in shock as to what had happened that day and the quickness of attention shown to Alan really made the difference. By the time we arrived at Sheffield hospital all necessary tests had been carried out and we were able to take Alan home that evening. Again a very big thank you.
Julia, Alan’s walking partner of 9 years and Deric.
Alan and i have been friends for over sixty years and i know him to be a very experienced walker. it just goes to show that accidents can happen at any time to anybody not just the inexperienced even the hardened walker can require assistance, how lucky we walkers are to have mountain rescue teams that offer such great assistance in times of need. Many thanks Buxton MRT .
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the members of the Buxton Mountain Rescue team who turned out on Sunday 3rd March following my rapid descent from Peter’s Stone in Cressbrook Dale. Amazingly, apart from severe bruising, my only injury was a deep cut on my forehead which was stitched and glued at Sheffield Northern General Hospital. I was given a full M.O.T and was home in Manchester by 9.00pm. I have made a donation of £50 …. to help out with your finances. Keep up the good work – you’re all indispensible!
Alan
